The Standards Of Ethical Coding Essay - 821 Words
As mentioned in my discussion, Health Information Coding Supervisors are trusted individuals who have access to an organizationââ¬â¢s highly confidential security system. A misrepresentation of this position can lead to significant consequences because of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (Prophet, 2015). Criminal penalties imposed on individuals who knowingly and willfully attempt to execute a scheme to defraud any health care benefit program can be up to 10 years imprisonment and possibly life imprisonment depending on the circumstances. Civil monetary penalties can lead to $2000 to $10,000 for each fraudulent payment received. After imagining I was a coding supervisor, I will provide answers throughout the paper to the following questions: 1. What emphasis would you place on the Standards of Ethical Coding in your area? 2. Would you include the Standards of Ethical Coding in your policy and procedure manual? 3. Would you review the Standards of Ethical Coding on a regular basis and if yes, how often? 4. What disciplinary action would you take if you found that a coder violated the Standards of Ethical Coding? 5. Would the severity of the disciplinary action depend on which standard was violated? Why or why not? 6. How do imperfections in coding affect the budget preparation of health care organizations? 7. How might it also affect the contracts between professional billers and coders and health care organizations? Racism And Its Negative Repercussions - 992 Words
There are many destructive forces in this world, one of them being racism, the most powerful prejudice in society, as seen by Harper Leeââ¬â¢s ââ¬ËTo Kill a Mockingbirdââ¬â¢. This small town in the 1930ââ¬â¢s, during the Great Depression presents numerous examples of racism and its negative repercussions. As illustrates in the novel, racism is displayed in a variety of ways throughout the novel, however it is most present in the case of Tom Robinsonââ¬â¢s trial, the prejudice that is displayed by the citizens of Maycomb, and the state of Calpurniaââ¬â¢s Church. The most apparent victim of racism in ââ¬ËTo Kill a Mockingbirdââ¬â¢ is Tom Robinson, the black man who is accused of raping Mayella Ewell. Falsely accused of the crime by Mayella and her father Bob Ewell,â⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦During the 1930ââ¬â¢s this situation would not be uncommon at all but looking at the situation from the perspective of modern times, this is a clear illustration of racism and its repercussions in action. Additionally, when Tom was sentences to jail time, he had tried to escape. When Atticus found out he told Calpurnia the news, hoping she would help break it to aunt Alexandra. When they were discussing what had happened, Atticus said, ââ¬Å"I guess Tom was tired of white men s chances and preferred to take his own.â⬠(Lee 315). It is clearly seen that the effects of racial prejudices on the trial led to Tom trying to escape in hopes of being free, which resulted in his death, all because of the colour of his skin. Atticus says in this quote that Tom would rather risk escaping than being around the white men that profile him negatively because of his race. Although we as the readers knew Tom was innocent, Atticusââ¬â¢ best efforts were not enough to persuade the jury to overlook the prejudice they have formed against the black population. The prejudice in this novel shows greatly that people were solely judged on only what people saw, and not the truth. Boo Radley is a victim of prejudice. Original Dracula movie Essay Example For Students
Original Dracula movie Essay A comparison between the original DRACULA movie (1931) and the (1994) movie INTERVIEW WITH A VAMPIRE.Ã Although the two films may be similar from being of the horror genre and vampirical sub-genre there are evidently several differences between the two.Ã Our original (1931) was adapted from the novel written by Bram Stoker, Stokers story is closely followed, using signifiers to link book and film. Interview With A Vampire was adapted from Anne Rices best selling book The Vampire Chronicles. The most obvious difference is date and location; both films use these elements to their advantage. Dracula is set in the 1930s using the two locations of the Transylvanian castle and the English manor house. The film uses opposites frequently to exxagerate the antithesis of good and evil, in having just these two converse locations the audience gains a devide, a barrier between the villains and victims own territories.Ã In IWAV we we are not limited to two locations or indeed a specific time priod, infact the plot has intermittent shots of action from the modern day right back until Luis birth in the eighteenth century. As Luis (Brad Pitt) is telling his life story we follow him on a quest through cities, countries continents. When reviewing the differences between the films it is very important to recognise that the films are over sixty years apart, not only has cinema been revolutionised and people changed the genre has been over exposed and explored with over 240 vampire films made. In the 1930s the only cinema audience who could afford such a pastime were upper middle classes, and films, as we can see in Dracula, must appeal to their mass audience this is why we can note that the film is very theatrical with huge walls and over emphasised acting, costume and set. Now in the modern day audiences have broadened and it is possible for most people to watch a video or visit the cinema and the audience requires and expects as much realism as possible, the increasing quality of special effects helps this. Special effects are frequent in both films and the modern day effects of IWAV are fantastic and plentiful, for example the ascension of the vampires in particular when Lestat (Tom Cruise) makes Luis at the beginning of the picture and later on the amazing fire at THEATRES DES VAMPYRES when Luis seeks his revenge on the murderers of Claudia (Kirsten Dunst) .Ã We realised that money is thrown into Hollywood today and that IWAVs budget is probably one hundred times Draculas. This is mirrored in Draculas special effects, which are inconsistent, and poor, I find it laughable when the characters begin to dart in fear when a rubber bat, complete with a yard of thick black wiring is flying towards them. There are some statements between moral and cultural issues, which dramatically oppose each other in the two films. For example over the sixty or so years the perception sexual orientation has been liberalised. Homoeroticism is clearly seen in IWAV especially when Lestat makes Luis and it is repeated when Luis leaves Armand to come home to New Orleans. This approach condemns the stereotypical courtship of upper-class couples seen in Dracula. There is also the fact that Dracula does not include the appearance of any ethnicity bar Caucasian. We are shown opposing narratives in both cases we side with the victims the only difference being that in IWAV the victim is a vampire a taker of lives. We are confronted with Draculas overwhelming control over mortals and Luis good hearted nature- a kind vampire?Ã IWAV breaks all codes and conventions with Luis reign of misery sorrow and compassion. In fact he would rather dine off the blood of bats and chickens than a tender slave- can you believe it!?Ã The two films mirror and outshine each other up until the conclusion as we can see how the history of the fictional creatures has evolved.

Syllables in phonology
Introduction Syllables in phonology form the basic foundation upon which words are constructed for all languages. The main components of these syllables vary with different languages as well as from word to word. This paper looks at some of the properties of syllables, attributes of sound change and similarities between Arabic and English syllables.Advertising We will write a custom assessment sample on Syllables in phonology specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More The Main Components of the Syllable A syllable refers to a rhythmic element of language that occurs to create an easy flow in the speech stream for the human brain to comprehend (Odden, 2005). It is often made up of parts also known as segments or components. Each word comprises one or more syllables. A syllable has a structure that can be split into individual components. These components consist of rhyme and onset. The rhyme is further categorized into two elements. The nucl eus is the first element, whereas the coda is the second element. It is worth noting that not all syllables contain these components and that there is a likelihood of the occurrence of a small syllable that is only made up of a nucleus. The onset, which marks the beginning sound when pronouncing a syllable, comes before the nucleus. In English, the onset components of syllables are often consonants. However, some consonants such as n, m, l, r alongside the velar nasal sometimes constitute the nucleus within a syllable. An example of an onset in a syllable is ââ¬Ërââ¬â¢ in the word ââ¬Ëread.ââ¬â¢ In the event that a word is made up of more than one syllable, each individual syllable comprises the normal syllable parts. For instance, window is pronounced as win.dow. Rhyme includes the remaining part of the syllable after the onset is pronounced. It is subdivided into nucleus and coda. The nucleus is the fundamental part of a syllable that is essential for the existence of the syllable. The nucleus often bears a high pitch and can be slightly louder than other parts of the syllable. Vowels make up a large number of nuclei in syllables. However, the velar nasal (ââ¬Ëngââ¬â¢), the nasals and the liquids sometimes form the nuclei of syllables in English words. The coda is the ultimate part of the syllable that comprises the last consonant or consonant group. Here is an example of the syllable components of the word ââ¬Ëread.ââ¬â¢Advertising Looking for assessment on linguistics? Let's see if we can help you! Conversely, the syllables that are not avoided are seen as unmarked. Syllables without onsets are marked in comparison with syllables that have onsets. Though syllables without onsets occur, they are predisposed to elimination. In addition, syllables that contain codas are more conspicuous than open syllables. Though every language permits the use of open syllables, some languages such as Shona do not allow the use of closed syllables. The languages that permit the application of codas syllabify VCV as V.CV. Regressive and Progressive Assimilation Assimilation refers to the progression of sound variation where a certain sound is prompted or transformed by other sounds (Ladefoged, 2006). It is a conventional phonological occurrence where one sound is influenced by other sounds. The process of assimilation can happen within one word or among several words. The assimilation can be regressive, progressive or from a distance. In regressive assimilation, the change in a phoneme is influenced by another phoneme that occurs after the modified phoneme. Regressive assimilation is often referred to as anticipatory assimilation or right-to-left assimilation due to the nature of the modifying phonemes. The sound change in this form of assimilation occurs backwards. An example of a regressive assimilation is in the pronunciation of the words ââ¬Ëhave to.ââ¬â¢ ââ¬ËHaveââ¬â¢ in this case is pronounced as ââ¬Ëhafââ¬â¢ and is influenced by the letter ââ¬Ëtââ¬â¢ in ââ¬Ëto.ââ¬â¢ Progressive assimilation is different from regressive assimilation in that the modification takes place in the onward process. In some unique scenarios, the two assimilating sounds display mutual inspiration. Though assimilation often happens between adjoining phonemes, it can happen between phonemes that are split up by other sounds. This type of assimilation is referred to as assimilation from a distance. Unconditioned versus Conditioned Sound Change A sound change is an occurrence in phonology that is generally accepted by all people who subscribe to a language or dialect. Modifications in sou nds progressively circulate from one speaker to another in a wavelike design until the changes are adopted by all users of the language or dialect. This implies that sound changes do not just occur spontaneously in all languages. The dependence or independence between the phonological progression that generates the modification in sound and the phonetic background in which change occurs determine whether a sound change is conditioned or unconditioned. A conditioned change in sound, therefore, occurs in a process that depends on the phonetic environment. On the contrary, the occurrence of an unconditioned sound change is not dependent on the phonetic environment.Advertising We will write a custom assessment sample on Syllables in phonology specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More An example of a conditioned change in sound is in assimilation where two different sounds become similar or influence each other as they become close to each oth er. Conditional sound changes also include insertion, deletion and disambiguation of sounds depending on the phonetic environment. An example of an unconditioned sound change is metathesis where the order of sound changes. Raising or lowering the position of the tongue produces variations in sounds. Metathesis can also be achieved by moving the tongue forward or backwards. An example is evident in the pronunciation of the word ââ¬Ëpat.ââ¬â¢ Similarities between English and Arabic Syllables English and Arabic speeches consider syllables as phonological elements on which words are constructed (Ladefoged, 2006). The two languages regard the syllable as the foundational unit on which the sequence, stress patterns and prosody of a language are constructed. English phonology views the syllable as an intricate element comprising the nucleus and the coda. The Arabic language views the syllable as a unit according to each language. This implies that every language possesses its unique arrangements of vowels and consonants among other characteristics such as stress, length and intonation. In English and Arabic, the syllable is seen as a phonological element made up of a vowel, which produces the nucleus, and a consonant that forms the coda and the onset. Both languages treat codas and onsets as categories of sound that precede and follow the peak. While the English syllable comprises a consonant and a rhyme made up of a compulsory nucleus and an optional coda, the Arabic language regards the syllable as an organized balance of analytic elements that rely on consonants (sawamit) and vowels (sawait). The vowel (in Arabic) takes the peak position between the consonants that act as bases for the syllable. However, the Arabic syllable is an essential element of the structure. Unlike English, Arabic does not perceive the syllable as an independent morpheme. Conclusion Syllables are important elements in phonology and in the development of any language. The components of syllables vary in different languages and assist in the pronunciation of certain words.Advertising Looking for assessment on linguistics? Let's see if we can help you! Which salt should be used to make an effective but economical cold pac
Which salt should be used to make an effective but economical cold pac Mrs. Raihan Honors Chemistry 25 March 2015 Which salt should be used to make an effective but economical cold pack? In accordance to the question above, a claim was developed after a series of experiments and observations, Ammonium Chloride, NH4Cl, is the most effectual but also economical ingredient to make a cold pack because it met the requirements of being an inexpensive salt and lowering the mixtures temperature by 2c. The claim was proved correctly based off of the quantitative and qualitative data that was taken down during the experiment. To find out whether the salt in the cold back is a good substance or not, the change in enthalpy change, which occurs with the process of dissolution, is also known as the heat of solution. At a constant pressure, the heat of solution is equivalent to the heat lost from the surrounding. For this to happen, the energy is absorbed to break the intermolecular bonds of both the water and the solute, energy is gained in this process. Then, energy is released as attractive forces start to form between the broken ions and water molecules, from here, energy is re leased. The heat of solution can therefore be an exothermic or endothermic depending on which one is stronger. In this case, the energy absorbed is stronger than the one being released which means it turns cold, an endothermic. So, one can discover if a cold pack is effective by finding the heat of solution then compare to the other salts tested to find out both economically cheap and most effective salt. Before the investigation commenced, steps were created in order to make sure that everything was going to work out. Using the previously known information, from previous labs made, it was inducted that the following steps would be done to perfect the experiment. First of all the safety equipment was gathered, the materials needed would be gathered and cleaned thoroughly to reduce any human error. The salts that were tested were Ammonium Chloride, Ammonium Nitrate, Magnesium Sulfate and Ammonium Thiocyanate. Then, a calorimeter would be made, two styrofoam cups within one another, a sheet of aluminum between them, a thermometer on top which was struck through the aluminum top to keep the temperature as isolated as possible to have the most accurate information. Then, taking a plastic cup, 30ml of water was measured out then placed into the calorimeter because then 2.5 grams of a salt was measured out. The initial temperature of the water was taken before the ingredients were mixed, i mmediately after, the temperature was taken down every five seconds for two minutes. The information was recorded in a graph and then averages of the time were taken down so there could be an even information for all salts so there would be no mistake made. The steps above were then repeated twice for each salt, all information recorded into a graph as well. The experiment was conducted in this way to include all of the possible experiments previously done to prove that it was successful, which in the end, based off of the claim, it was correct. Based off of the guiding question, Ammonium Chloride is the best salt needed to meet both the requirements of being an economically cheap salt and also effective. Ammonium Chloride fell from 21.25c to 18.65c, it dropped more than 2c. The second part of the question asks to choose the cheapest salt, that is still effective which is NH4Cl at $0.0139 per gram. Thus, the salt that meets the guiding questions needs is Ammonium Chloride because it met the 2c temperature drop along with an economically cheap price. Using the graphs and tables provided, it is easier to identify the change in temperature for each salt. When one observes NH4Cl, it is easy to comprehend that it is the most efficient one since it has around the same information like the more better, but also expensive ones. Finally, after the information was gathered, the magnitude of heat energy change was found by using the following equation: Q=mcT which was then transferred to the heat that the salt let out before dividing i t by the number of moles in the solute. The heat of solution was

Converting Ounces to Grams
Converting Ounces to Grams This worked example problem demonstrates how to convert ounces to grams. This is a common type of mass unit conversion problem. One of the most common practical reasons to know how to do this conversion is for recipes, so lets start with a food example: Ounces To Grams Problem A chocolate bar weighs 12 ounces. What is its weight in grams? Solution One of the easiest ways to solve this problem is to use the pound to kilogram conversion. If you like in a country where both units are used, this is a useful conversion to know. Start by converting ounces into pounds. Then convert the pounds into kilograms. All that remains is to move the decimal point three places to the right to convert kilograms into grams. Here are the conversions you need to know:16 oz 1 lb1 kg 2.2 lbs1000 g 1 kgYou are solving for x numbers of grams. First, convert ounces into pounds. The next part of the solution converts pounds to kilograms, while the final section converts kilograms to grams. Note how units cancel each other out, so all you are left with is grams. x g 12 ozx g 12 oz x (1 lb/16 oz) x (1 kg/2.2 lb) x (1000 g/1 kg)x g 340.1 g Answer The 12 oz chocolate bar weighs 340.1 g.

Classroom Management Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words - 1
Classroom Management - Essay Example These elements are what a good teacher must keep in mind in order to achieve a well-managed classroom. Deviating from the behaviorist theory of education, a teacher who wants to handle a class successfully must remember to make the student the center of everything. In organizing a classroom, the student should be the utmost consideration. From the placement of materials to the arrangement of each chair and tables, the student should be of primary importance. Materials must be arranged in a way the students can easily find them. Also, they must be well-kept so as not to bring any harm to the students. Chairs and tables must be set in a way that brings not only comfort to the student but also puts him in the mindset to study. At times, chairs and tables need to be re-arranged in a certain way so as to pique the curiosity of the students and engage them in the lesson. The teacher should always keep in mind that the arrangement of materials, desks and chairs should facilitate the learning of the class. Motivation comes in many methods. Contrary to the behaviorist theory, it is not only through memorization, drills and practices that a teacher can make a student learn. Motivation is an important aspect of classroom management as this can spell a productive or a boring class. In the assigned video clip (Classroom Management, 1995-2010) , motivation was shown in a pre-lesson activity the teacher had given even before the students entered the classroom. I think this was a very good idea. Teachers should remember that not all students may want to come to class. Some may be sleepy, not interested or just not in the mood that particular day. If the teacher allows these students to come to class, chances are their demeanor would affect the productivity of the class and the effectiveness of the teacher. Motivation should go beyond a list of words to remember or numerous

Industrial revolution - Research Paper Example For instance, agriculture enhanced production of wool and cotton, which recorded an increase in year (Moris 90). Regarding the coral mining, it is clear that in the 18th and 19th centuries, coral miners experienced a risky environment and incurred suicidal dangers. Today different mining methods considered safe are in place. Apparently, there are methods like a modernized form of tunnel ventilation, improved underground as well as surface transportation. Transportation determines cost and availability of manufactured goods (Morris 130). If the means of improved communication is not worth it, then productsââ¬â¢ price increases. Hence, demands grow. These phenomena caused life to be more expensive. After several inventions, life has become cheaper. In the 18th century, the population grew at a faster rate than before. Birth rates were observed to enhance growth of population (Dickens 39). There were a decline in the death rate and increase in the birth rate, and that ensured faster growth. Again, industry provided a higher amount of wages to individuals. In conclusion, the industrial revolution resulted in a remarkable advancement in not only peopleââ¬â¢s lifestyle but also better mechanisms were developed to make the overall working easier. Consequently, there was an increase in the general

Plato, Gorgias Essay Example for Free
Plato, Gorgias Essay Introductionà à à à à à à à à à à à à à Platoââ¬â¢s Gorgias is actually the story of virtue. Plato was evidently trying to resolve the ever lasting debate of what virtue was and what elements constituted virtue. In his dialogue with Gorgias, Socrates has not unilaterally concluded what virtue was; he has rather discussed what it could be. I totally agree with Plato who states that ââ¬Å"the good is not the same as the pleasant, my friend, nor the evil as the painfulâ⬠(Plato), because to be pleasant means to be subjective, and the notion of good is evidently an objective philosophical category. Virtue may be determined through the prism of its separate elements. Even when each of us individually determines what virtue is, there are still certain specific societal norms which may help us distinguish between good and evil. Plato has actually created several grounded suggestions as for what virtue was by discussing its separate elements: power, justice, temperance, and art. à à à à à à à à à à à ââ¬Å"Rhetoric is to justice what cookery is to medicineâ⬠(Plato). This may initially seem surprising, as virtue and rhetoric are the two completely different philosophical categories. Moreover, there can hardly any connections between these two. However, Plato links them through the importance of rhetoric to justice, and through the importance of justice to the virtue. Objectively, the whole dialogue between Socrates and Gorgias comprises several separate discussions which are connected by one common topic: virtue. Plato was trying to depict virtue as the system of separate attributes and elements, and to discuss them through the prism of those elements: art, temperance, evil, and good. This is why Plato has concluded that good could not be equaled to pleasure due to its objectivity as opposed to the subjectivity of pleasure. Plato started Socratesââ¬â¢ dialogue with the discussion of art of rhetoric, and has led it to the issue of the greatest good. As virtue is determined and is directly connected to the greatest good, it is crucial that people know what this greatest good is. ââ¬Å"That good, Socrates, which is truly the greatest, being that which gives men freedom in their own persons, and to individuals the power of ruling over others in their several statesâ⬠(Plato). That was the vision of the greatest good as expressed by Gorgias. This is the individual vision of Gorgias, which may not always be accepted by others. As a result, how do we determine the difference between the false and the true arts? How do we determine what false and what truthful knowledge is? These were the questions raised by Plato in his Gorgias, and this is where the philosopher again implied that the greatest good was an objective, and not subjective philosophical category. Good and evil are the two objective categories which can even be taught or learnt. Subjective categories can hardly be learnt, this is why Plato implies that good is objective. Only objective philosophical categories can be learnt by others and can be perceived in a manner expected by other members of the society: ââ¬Å"so he whom you make a rhetorician must either know the nature of the just and unjust already, or he must be taught by youâ⬠(Plato). à à à à à à à à à à à In his work, Plato speaks much about evil. Evil is opposed to good, and is also considered to be an objective philosophical category. According to Plato, evil is rooted in the wrongful and shameful acts. The seriousness of evil can either be determined by the extent of shame the person experiences, or by the severity of physical pain the person feels. It is interesting that this is the only position which is unilaterally accepted by all participants of the conversation. ââ¬Å"Then I said truly, Polus that neither you, nor I, nor any man, would rather, do than suffer injustice; for to do injustice is the greater evil of the twoâ⬠(Plato). Plato explicitly determines what the greatest evil is, and Socratesââ¬â¢ opponents have but to agree with him. Pain is subjective, and being involved into evil does not mean experiencing pain. Evil is the integral element of the discussion of virtue. There cannot be any effective discussion of what virtue is, without trying to define what evil can be. The importance of evil as philosophical notion is in its being linked to other crucial notions within the framework of virtue discussion. Politics, power, temperance ââ¬â a philosopher cannot evaluate these categories away from evil. As Plato concludes that injustice and intemperance are the two greatest evils, he not only confirms the philosophical objectivity of evil, but he once again returns to the issue of pleasant and good: pleasant cannot always be good, and evil cannot always be pain. There is clear distinction between subjective and objective philosophical categories, and this is the key to understanding the implications of moral standards in Platoââ¬â¢s society. à à à à à à à à à à à As Plato speaks about good, evil, justice, temperance, power, and other important philosophical categories, he pursues the ultimate aim of his discussion and his lifelong philosophy: to define what virtue is. Those who participate in Socratesââ¬â¢ discussion, actually participate not in the dialogue, but in the brilliant argument upon the relevance and objectivity of these categories. Nonetheless, the objectivity of power, temperance, and justice is not debated: these also constitute the objective notion of virtue. As evil is not always pain, and good is not always pleasant, Plato also tries to show that ââ¬Å"a man should be temperate and master of himself, and ruler of his own pleasures and passionsâ⬠(Plato). Thus, a person should realize what common good is, what pleasures he is to suppress and to temper his passions. This knowledge of good and evil is the objective realization of societal standards and norms. This is the realization of how good or evil impacts our existence. Plato uses this key comparison between pleasant and good to show that he was correct in his assumption: virtue is the objective notion, and it can be determined in universal philosophical terms, which are objective, too. The separate objective elements (power, justice, temperance, art) ultimately constitute the philosophical structure of virtue. à à à à à à à à à à à I absolutely agree with Plato: pleasant is never equal to good, and pain is never equal to evil. Letââ¬â¢s discuss this point in detail. A simple example will help understand my position. We are constantly involved into the process of taking decisions. We must decide how to behave, how to apologize, how to avoid troubles, etc. There are the two distinctive criteria, on which we can base our judgments. First, we can rely on the universally accepted norms of human behavior in our society. Our standards make us aware and teach us how we should behave in certain situations, and what good and evil is. Second, we may also rely on our pleasure, and pleasure may become the main criterion in our decision making. This means that we will not rely on norms and standards of human behavior: we will use extremely subjective measurements which may hardly be accepted by others. Here pleasure is very close to personal tastes, which are never identical. If I enjoy historical documentaries, this does not mean that my brother will like them too; he would hardly accept the situation in which I will constantly watch this type of TV programs, and will not let him watch what he wants. This is where pleasure and good come into action. This is where objectivity and subjectivity of virtue become almost tangible. If I base my decision on pleasure, I will neglect the interests of other family members, and will keep doing what I want. Does this mean that I am good, if I experience pleasure in this situation? Certainly, it does not. Good is not similar to pleasant, and pleasure is a subjective category. What pleases me does not necessarily pleases others, but what is good is usually good for everyone. Being generous, attentive to others, and sharing is good; it is also good for those who need this attention and generosity. à à à à à à à à à à à This prism of discussion also possesses a different facet. When a person is good to others, does it mean that this person is pleased with such situation? Coming back to the issue with television and documentaries, a person may certainly accept the need to follow the general standards of virtue, good, and temperance. This person will do everything possible to suppress the wishes and pleasures, and to let other family members watch TV. Simultaneously, this need ââ¬Å"to be goodâ⬠will probably urge the person to step over his inner principles, and to pretend that to be good is pleasant. This person may avoid displaying the displease with such situation, or may not conceal the irritation, but it is evident that to be good for this person is not to feel pleasure of this goodness. à à à à à à à à à à à What I see as the key element of Platoââ¬â¢s argument, is the need to distinguish between the true and the false elements of virtue, between the objective and subjective standards of our conduct, and between pleasure and good. Plato was also discussing the elements of evil and pain in his work, but these issues seem less relevant to our lives. Evil is always evil, no matter whether it causes pain, but good is not good if it is based on oneââ¬â¢s pleasures only. à à à à à à à à à à à Conclusion à à à à à à à à à à à In his philosophical work, Plato was actually trying to determine what virtue was. The philosopher used a bright parallel between good and pleasant to suggest that good was objective, and pleasant was subjective. The criteria of pleasure are mostly misleading when a person has to decide what good is. The problem is that good is an objective notion, and the standards of good are usually universally accepted within the specific society. Simultaneously, pleasure is a narrow subjective philosophical category. There is no such notion as universal pleasure. If a person pursues pleasure, this person risks being rejected by the society in the way he rejects the principles of objective good and virtue. If a person wants to follow the standards of good, pleasure should be pushed to the background. In this context, good is not always pleasant. The obligation to conform to the norms of the society is not always linked to any pleasant emotions or perceptions. In order to be accepted by the society, a person might need to overstep his personal principles, and to recognize the importance of good, temperance, power, and justice as the integral components of virtue. Ultimately, the person is to praise the objective moral categories, and to put them ahead of subjective perceptions. This is how human virtue works for the benefit of the whole society. Revelation Essay -- essays research papers
"Revelation, n. A famous book in which St. John the Divine concealed all that he knew. The revealing is done by the commentators, who know nothing."1 The book of Revelation, the only apocalypse among the twenty-seven books of the New Testament, has always occupied a marginal role within the field of Biblical interpretation. Its bizarre visions of beasts, dragons, plagues, and cataclysms have inspired poets and artists while confounding more traditionally minded scholars for centuries. England in the early seventeenth century proved an exception to this rule. The flowering of apocalyptic exegesis in this period among academic circles bestowed a new respectability on the book of Revelation as a literal roadmap of church history from the time of Christ to the present, and on into the eschaton. The principal writers in this field, including Arthur Dent, Thomas Brightman, and Joseph Mede, have been dubbed "Calvinist millenarians" by modern historiography. They were cer tainly Calvinist in their views on doctrine, and also in their melioristic vision of England as the consummation of the Reformation, as an elect nation with the potential to recreate the true church of the early Christians. Their intense belief in the imminence of the end of the world, however, along with the mode of interpretation which they applied to the Revelation, reflected trends in Christian thought redirected by Martin Luther, and largely ignored by John Calvin. In this paper I will examine Luthers role in three English interpretations of the Revelation, discussing both his influence as an intellectual precedent, and his appearance as a character within these texts. Luther himself never wrote a detailed commentary on the Apocalypse, but in a preface to the 1530 edition of his German New Testament, he outlined a mode of exegesis which emphasized the application of the Revelation to history. This literal approach first appeared in England in a 1545 commentary by John Bale, a transitional figure often considered the progenitor of the English apocalytic tradition. Later works utilized Luthers model more completely, and I will cite three of these in particular: Arthur Dents Ruin of Rome (1603), an excellent introduction to the mainstream of English commentaries; Thomas Brightmans Revelation of St. John (1609), which epitomized the Anglocentric slant inherent to the Englis... ...rines and works."16 Unlike some medieval commentators, who also identified the pagan Turk with Antichrist, Luther chose to apply the image strictly to the papacy, and associated the Turk with the beasts unleashed by the devil after his millennium of bondage.17 Thus Luther used both history and Scripture to attack the Pope, and this doctrinal foundation allowed him to carry his polemic one step further. He believed that under the influence of the ungodly papacy the Church had diverged from the true, "hidden" Church which continued to uphold the Word of God under persecution. Luthers reinterpretation of the two cities of Augustine appeared in his 1530 preface, where he stated that one could read the Revelation as a warning against the trials the church will face. In these battles, the enemies of the faithful will obscure the church under heresies and other faults, calling the elect "them damned heretics who are really the true christian Church."18 Luther was far from being the first to interpret history as Gods work, but his insistence on the agreement between the Bible and history led him to mount a novel, doctrinally based assault on the Catholic Church.

Child by Tiger Essay
In Tomas Wolfeââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"The Child by Tiger,â⬠Dick Prosser, an oppressed black man living in the South, symbolizes innocence and evilness. Although Dick appears as an extremely religious and respectful man in white society, he gradually allows evilness to consume him, causing Dick to embark on a killing spree. While conforming to the black role, Dick attempts to gain a positive reputation through treating the children with respect. He calls them by a ââ¬Å"formal address ââ¬â ââ¬ËMr.ââ¬â¢ Crane, ââ¬ËMr.ââ¬â¢ Potterham, ââ¬ËMr.ââ¬â¢ Spangler, ââ¬ËCapââ¬â¢nââ¬â¢ Shepperton.â⬠He teaches the boys how to play football and how to box so that he can live a better life. Through his chores, Dick constantly proves to be a respectful worker. He would even sing hymnals as he goes ââ¬Å"about his work around the house.â⬠Dick keeps his room ââ¬Å"spotless as a barracks roomâ⬠with only his Bible on his little table. Although he is a smart man, others still only see him as the ââ¬Å"smartest darky.â⬠On Sundays during church service, Dick would stand ââ¬Å"neatly dressed in his good dark suitâ⬠and would ââ¬Å"humblyâ⬠listen to the ââ¬Å"entire sermon.â⬠Although Dick is not allowed in the white church, he stands at the ââ¬Å"side doorâ⬠and recognizes the familiar verses from his ââ¬Å"old Bible,â⬠which is ââ¬Å"worn out by constant use.â⬠After years of oppression, Dick finally decided that he had enough. The day that Lon Everett, a white drunken man, ââ¬Å"skidded murdouslyâ⬠and ââ¬Å"sideswipedâ⬠Dick was the very same day that his ââ¬Å"eyes went red.â⬠Dick proceeds to tend to his master after the crash. Everett then ââ¬Å"smashed him in the faceâ⬠while Dickââ¬â¢s hands ââ¬Å"twitched slightlyâ⬠at his side. Once Everett punched Dick for the second time, blood comes ââ¬Å"tricklingâ⬠down his face. Dick moved swiftly down the street ââ¬Å"shooting from the hipâ⬠killing both blacks and white whether they were guilty or innocent. One ââ¬Å"old Negro man stuck outâ⬠his head and is shot without hesitation. Another ââ¬Å"kindly,â⬠ââ¬Å"devoted,â⬠ââ¬Å"pleasant florid faced manâ⬠is murdered as well. Dick sees whites as the enemy as well as the blacks who do nothing to change the course of history. As Dick surrenders peacefully, he is ââ¬Å"filled with bulletsâ⬠by the ââ¬Å"posse.â⬠The men shot him some more and then took his ââ¬Å"lifeless bodyâ⬠and ââ¬Å"hung him to a treeâ⬠where they sprayed him with more bullets until he was a ââ¬Å"riddled carcass.â⬠He is brought back to town to be hung in a window like an animal as a warning to other blacks. Living as an oppressed black man in the South, Dick Prosser symbolizes both the good and evil in everyone through his good deeds and his ramped killing spree. Even though Dick clearly had the ability to fight back, he was held back by the white society because he had no rights.

Tea Tree Oil Production Essay Example
Tea Tree Oil Production Essay Example Tea Tree Oil Production Essay Example Tea Tree Oil Production Essay Example The Genealogy of a Consumer Good: Tea Tree Oil Tea tree oil is an essential oil which is taken from Melaleuca Alternifolia leaves, the tree that is usually grown in Southwest Queensland in Australia. It can also be found in New South Wales. The oil has a fresh odor of almost colorless substance. The product is considered to be a natural antiseptic that is widely used in cosmetics and medicine. It can also be effective for treating various dermatologic problems, such as acne, herpes, foot fungus, dandruff and other skin infections. In particular, the indigenous population used tea tree leaves due to their healing effect. It was further approved in medicine and biology, leading to the rise of the tea tree industry. With regard to the above-presented facts, the emergence of the tea tree oil industry has been associated with the environmental factors and consumer demand. Major Problems Led to the Tea Tree Oil Production As it has been briefly mentioned, tea tree oil was used for healing wounds and skin problems. Its active use refers to the period of the World War II, the time when the product was used for healing wounds (Australian Tea Tree Oil, 2009). As a result, it could be stressed that the major problems leading to the active use of tea tree oil were associated with health problems and social unrest. Due to its effective medical properties, the tea tree essential oil was first of all used as a medicine that could heal wounds, having an antibacterial effect. Health problems, therefore, were decisive in spreading and encouraging the production of the oil. Factors That Have Led to the Emergence of These Problems The history of the product counts more than seventy years. In the 1920s and 1930s the indigenous Bundjalung people residing in Eastern Australia were assume to have applied tea trees in traditional medicine (Australian Tea Tree Oil, 2009). They crushed leaves of the tree and treated wounds, sore throats and insect bites. The area in which the plant is grown is called Bungawalbyn, which is also translated as the ââ¬Ëhealing groundââ¬â¢. When Captain James Cook arrived to this area, he called the plant a tea tree because the local population made tee from the leaves for healing purposes. Further, the plant became the object of the medical and biological reports. Specifically, Arthur Penfold and Morrison introduced first reports on the qualities and antiseptic properties of a tee tree (Australian Tea Tree Oil, 2009). While evaluating the antimicrobial qualities of the product, the scholars rated them 11-13 times more active as compared to phenol; it turned out to be safer, as well . When such reports were approved, the tea tree industry has been launched and is still successful nowadays. Till the 1940s tea tree oil was used as an antiseptic to solve problems with skin infections. However, the discovery of penicillin in 1940s decreased the demand for tea tree oil production (American Cancer Society, 2008). Several decades later, the scientists discovered that the Australian oil was still the only antiseptic that would kill certain bacteria, which were resistant to penicillin and other antibiotics. Therefore, the production of the oil was renewed, alongside with new spheres in which such product applied. In general, most health and environmental problems have become the decisive in the production of tea tree oil. Product Consumption, Fetishism of Commodities and False Consciousness Tea tree oil production is an environmentally beneficial industry because it excludes the use of chemicals. Instead, only natural substances are introduced into production. From a consumerist perspective, the product is environmentally friendly, ensuring a significant competitive advantage over the production of other antiseptic products. Since its launch to the market, the product underwent several stages of product implementation and integration. Due to the emergence of the so-called ââ¬Ëcure-allââ¬â¢ products, consumers were obsessed with buying such commodities because they believed in the advertising of their values. However, subjective descriptions of commodities create false assumptions about the product. In case of tea tree oil, some of the retailers still use false descriptions to make people believe that their products are more effective (Robbins, 2013). The market trends in product launch are oriented at capturing the new market segment and attract new customers by introducing new qualities. However, such qualities should be presented not in the form of falsely assumed values, but in the form of serious research conducted to prove that tea tree oil is effective as antiseptic (Australian Tea Tree Oil, 2009). In contrast, when a false assumption is created about the product values, it makes no connection with the physical description of the product nature. By means of establishing the relationship between the buyers and customers through exchanging goods and money, the commodity fetishism is created. Similar to it, the Body Shop is also working on the creation of the consumer-oriented philosophy, according to which the cosmetic they offer is highly valued because it is made of natural ingredients. Although the company focuses on the top quality of the product, the relation between retailer and the consumer is still important and the latter perceive the products as commodities, being an inherent part of social interaction. Due to the development and spread of the commodity fetishism paradigm, the false consciousness is created among the consumers regarding a specific commodity. From sociological perspective, a false consciousness is a subjective attitude that is imposed on an individual and which is often presented as a personal opinion of an individual, although it is not reflected accurately and objectively. Hence, sometimes, a consumer can express a specific thought regarding a product due to the generally accepted opinion among the consumers who reject the objective position. Sometimes, people buy products as a result of strong ideology developed by the company. In particular, the ideological conceptions are often misinterpreted by consumers. In fact, such ideological statements create false consciousness, which leads to the creation of dominant ideology. It is currently a growing trend for all the companies to introduce their environmental strategies to influence customer decisions whether to buy product or not (Robbins, 2013). The idea of false consciousness, therefore, makes people committed to a specific product, although there is always a possibility that such idea is only a well-arranged combination of words. In order to understand the consumer trend, the attention should be placed on the market established for tea tree oil. The manufactures should offer improved products which could compete with similar goods in the field. At this point, it is essential to adhere to a positive approach regarding marketing of tea tree oil. Its major qualities and virtues should be emphasized and meet the highest standards, which is possible through reducing the percentage of cineole, a substance which enhances the oil properties. To explain the issue, the scholars argue, ââ¬Å"â⬠¦some natural tea tree oils of higher cineole content, but still within the ISO Standards, are more effective against certain pathogensâ⬠(Southwell Lowe, 2003, p. 208). It should be assumed, however, that the major market segment for tea tree oil product is introduced in the cosmetic field, assigning the description of general antiseptic, pure oil, which could be used for treating acne and skin infections. Although the market segment develops, expansion is still restricted due to the difficulties in obtaining approval regarding the effectiveness of the product. In case of success, new markets could be open, alongside with the registration of FDA monographs, emergence of goods registers and other procedures, which imply significant costs (Robbins, 2013). Despite such difficulties, the oil could be sold in the pharmaceutical field. As a result, it is essential for the product to gain a competitive advantage over other related products, which have been introduced in the market. While the oils are highly appraised in the cosmetic field, the main requirement in the medical sphere is directly associated with the effectiveness. The above-presented marketing strategies introduce certain methods and trends in shaping ââ¬Ëconsumer consciousnessesââ¬â¢, which are used by the Body Shop, a beauty retails, which operates over 35 years. Many consumers are still committed to the products due to the retailerââ¬â¢s philosophy. Its environmental strategies allow the consumers to notice that human rights and fair trade are among the priorities and, therefore, many consumers are captured by such philosophy (Australian Tea Tree Oil, 2009). The company also assures that they do not test their production on animals, and they are concerned with the environmental problems. Moreover, the company managers may state that their retailer is unique because it is committed to the distribution of one brand only. The Body Shop is aware of the economic difficulties and, due to the presence of loyal customers, the company can hold its positions in the market. Therefore, orientation on consumers is the key and transparent ideolo gy of the retailer (Verburg, 2012). With the emphasis placed on consumer consciousness, the retailer takes an advantage and provides a new strategy that persuades their regular consumers pay more for products that contain natural ingredients and are not harmful to the environment. Although the price policy is not competitive, its product development issues are much more effective in attracting new clients. Brand loyalty is the key to facing a rigorous competition in the field of cosmetics and medicine. In particular, it is highly important for the retailer to defend its genuine positions and roots to increase confidence on the part of the consumers. The Body Shop, therefore, is attached to several important virtues, such as anti-animal testing, fair trade, human rights protection, environmental protection and self-esteem development (Verburg, 2012). Product innovation should correlate with a new beauty movement, which is ethical and natural. In this regards, the clients of the Body Shop buy their products, such as tea tree oil, because they strongly believe in the quality and value accepted and dictated by the company. Consumers are encouraged to travel and discover something new, while learning about the nature and origins of the products. Maps could show where ingredients are grown and how they are processed. All such approaches are taken in accordance with the corporate social respo nsibility guidelines, which are accepted at an international level. The brand development should also become the part of a wider policy. The contributions made to the product innovation are associated with the design and technologies that make the process of tea tree oil manufacturing safer and environmentally friendly. Proposed Solutions and Alternative Recommendations for Solving Consumer Problems Recently, tea tree oil sales rates have substantially increased due to its popularity. In case synthesis products are very effective in the field, the trend may negatively influence tea tree oil, unless it is demonstrates that the oil is as effective as its natural analogue. In order to persuade that the product is highly competitive at the market, serious scientific research is required to demonstrate the genuine value of the oil. In fact, the product has multiple natural advantages, which could be used in the industry (Southwell Lowe, 2003). It is also applicable in many spheres, such as cosmetology, healthcare and pharmaceuticals. At the early stages of its revival, it was regarded as a healing product which could treat almost all diseases. Currently, it is used in more specialized spheres. The problem is that the market is restricted for such products and, to cover the range of its characteristics and properties, the oil must be assigned with accurate descriptions and exact purp oses. The contemporary market is too sophisticated to assume that the ââ¬Ëcure allââ¬â¢ product could be in high demand among consumers (Southwell Lowe, 2003). Therefore, the product should be introduced specifically with regard to certain qualities. Its production specifics can vary as well, because the product affects the range of pathogens the tea tree oil can treat. It should be stressed that the industry has tried to reduce the potential of the product to limit its production to one type, although at least three types of tea tree oil are introduced. The advantage of operating with genetically diverse natural products creates the opportunities for intra-breeding. In case the market trend for tea tree oil would expand, the variety of products is essential and it can be achieved through the development of products with a specific purpose. According to Southwell and Lowe (2003), ââ¬Å"â⬠¦if tea tree oil is to fulfill its potential and so increase its market, selection and breeding will occurâ⬠(p. 207). Therefore, as the researchers argue, the oil chemical type would be developed and integrated to the market in case it turns out the most effective cure against specific human pathogens. Chemical modification, therefore, is among feasible methods, but it is not environmentally friendly. In order to promote the opportunity for inter-specific breeding, it is necessary to limit the industry potential. The information about types of oil, chemical composition, levels of quality and pricing strategies could be much more persuasive for consumers than a mere statement that the products are based on natural ingredients only. The attention to current sphere could be overestimated due to the globally accepted trends in following environmental strategies. In order to avoid the false consciousness and attract more clients, it is highly essential for the company to invest into the research and development department and conduct new scientific tests and researchers that would prove the effectiveness of tea tree oil. The clients should be assured that the product is effective and its qualities are proved by scientific experimentation. Placing customer feedbacks on the websites is a generally accepted and well-known strategy introduced by the company to persuade the clients that the product is effective and it can cope with the skin infections. However, such function can be improved in case the feedbacks could be left online and the clients buying products could exchange their opinions, problems and concerns. Additionally, there should also be the access to the support team, which could immediately propose help in case a client wants to make an inquiry. For instance, there should be a separate tab for communicating with the research and development team. The illustration of transparency and honesty can also be revealed by the certifications displayed on sites. In such way, the company can attract more consumers and alleviate the threat of false advertising. It is highly important for producers to explain the consumers that the poor results received from the product use could be the consequence of incorrect use and failure to follow the instructions, which relate to preservations, terms of use and many other conditions affecting the effectiveness of tea tree oil. In order to alleviate the competition, which is often predetermined by the widely used competitive strategies, it is essential to explore new methods of distributing and expanding the product. Due to the fact that the Australian tea tree oil could be sold more effectively in Australia, other areas could also enjoy buying the product. In order to enter the new market, the scientists should explore new location and estimate new production capacities to make the product more cost-effective. In other words, the emphasis should be placed on internal marketing conditions and organizational processes, which can minimize the costs spent on manufacturing tea tree oil. Apart from this issue, the idea of ecologically friendly packaging can also attract more clients. Although such new ideology does not contribute to the effectiveness of the product itself, it can encourage buying the product because it has less detrimental impact on the environment. Such phenomenon can be referred to as false co nsciousness and commodity fetishism because it enhances the relationship between the consumer and the manufacturer. More importantly, the current program proposed by the Body Shop, particularly its marketing strategies, ensures that their customer-oriented values decrease the focus on the effectiveness of their products. Currently, there are many other retailers that can offer natural cosmetics as well, because such product does not require substantial process before it is introduced to the market. However, the philosophy surrounding the product seems to be more valuable than the product itself, thus distorting the clientsââ¬â¢ perceptions of the product and making them buy the product due to the brand loyalty. In conclusion, the tea tree oil proposed by the Body Shop originates from the Southwest Australia and was originally known as the ââ¬Ëhealingââ¬â¢ tree, which was helpful in treating wounds and skin infections. Such qualities were noticed by the researchers and scientists who explored the plant. In their reports, tea tree oil was found to be effective for treating different human pathogens due to its anti-bacterial quality. During the Second World War, the product was also used as antiseptic and its popularity grew due to the health conditions of the period. Further, the product has become the object of commerce and many pharmaceutical and cosmetics companies have started promoting the tea tree oil due to its multiple functions. The product is currently on the market and enjoys high customer demand. However, due to high competition, the manufacturers should resort to effective advertising strategies to sustain a competitive advantage. In the majority of cases, the content of advertizing and promotion is not confined to the analysis of the product useful qualities and characteristics; on the contrary, the producers pay attention to the environmental sustainability of the product. Environmentally friendly customers will definitely buy products that are delivered by companies that are sensitive to ecological problems. Nonetheless, The Body Shop emphasizes both strategies. In particular, it appeals to consumersââ¬â¢ consciousness and explains the utmost qualities of the product by delivering the results of the research, proving that tea tree oil is helpful in struggling with skin problems and infections. In the future, the company should continue investing into the research and development of the initiative t o attract more clients and make them realize the genuine value of using tea tree oil. They should also provide more information about different types of tea tree oil due to the diverse techniques and technologies used in the production process.

7 Steps to a Successful MIT Application
7 Steps to a Successful MIT Application SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips In 2018, MIT admitted only 6.7% of students who applied to the school. With such a low admissions rate, it may seem like getting accepted is close to impossible, but weââ¬â¢re here to help! In this guide, weââ¬â¢ll explain everything you need to know to complete the MIT application, including when every important MIT application deadline is, what exactly you need to submit with your application, what admissions officers are really looking for when they review your application, and how you can make each part of your MIT application stand out from the pack. Key Info for the MIT Application You should know all the important information about the MIT application well before you plan on applying to make sure you gather all your materials and meet all the deadlines. Where to find the MIT application: You can find the MIT application here. The application opens in August of each year. How to submit the MIT application: When youââ¬â¢ve completed the MIT application, you can submit it by hitting the ââ¬Å"Submitâ⬠button at the end of the application. SAT and/or ACT scores, as well as your official transcript, must be sent directly to MIT. When to submit the MIT application:It's very important to know the MIT application deadline. MIT offers both early action and regular action application submissions. Below is a chart of the key deadlines for each option. Itââ¬â¢s important to know every deadline since missing just one could mean your application wonââ¬â¢t be looked at. Early Action Deadline What's Due November 1 Application parts 1 and 2Two letters of recommendation Secondary school report November testing date Standardized Test Scores February 15 February Updates Notes Form February 15 Financial Aid Materials (optional) Regular Action Deadline What's Due January 1 Application parts 1 and 2Two letters of recommendationSecondary school report December testing date Standardized Test Scores February 15 February Updates Notes Form February 15 Financial Aid Materials (optional) If youââ¬â¢re applying early action, youââ¬â¢ll need to have both parts of the application completed, and your transcript and letters of recommendation sent, by November 1st. You can still take the SAT, ACT, and/or SAT Subject tests in November, however. Youââ¬â¢ll receive your admission decision in mid-December. For students applying regular action, youââ¬â¢ll need to have all parts of the application completed/sent by January 1st, and you can take your standardized tests no later than December. Youââ¬â¢ll receive your admission decision in mid-March. Should You Apply Early Action or Regular Action? There are two options for applying to MIT, early action and regular action. Is one better than the other? If you apply early action, you do have a slightly better chance of getting accepted. According to MITââ¬â¢s admission statistics, if you apply early action, you do have a slightly better chance of getting accepted than if you apply regular action. However, MIT specifically states this about its early action cycle: "There is no positive or negative prejudice associated with or conferred by applying during either cycle. We do not have a preference, and there is no strategic benefit to be had. We have two cycles for two reasons: 1) it helps us spread our work out over a longer period, devoting more time to each application and 2) it provides applicants with more options so they can choose which works best for them." Additionally, the majority (about 66%) of students who apply early action end up getting deferred and considered in the regular action applicant pool. So an early decision is by no means guaranteed if you apply early action. Bottom line? Apply early action if you can get all the materials in before the deadline, but donââ¬â¢t stress too much about it if you canââ¬â¢t since it likely wonââ¬â¢t impact your chance of getting admitted. How to Apply to MIT There are six main steps you need to follow to submit your MIT application. Below are the steps, numbered in the rough order you should complete them in. Step 1: Create a MyMIT Account and Start Your Application The first step to applying to MIT is simple; you just need to create a MyMIT account.Creating an account only takes a few minutes, and once you do this youââ¬â¢ll be able to complete an application, track the pieces of the application youââ¬â¢ve submitted, join the MIT mailing list, and get your interviewerââ¬â¢s name and contact information. To create an account youââ¬â¢ll have to fill out some basic demographic information such as your birthdate, high school name, and home address. Step 2: Complete Parts 1 and 2 of the Application This is the bulk of the MIT application. Part 1 focuses on biographical information, and Part 2 focuses on your essays, activities, and test scores.Part 1 is the shorter section and should only take you about 30 minutes to complete. Youââ¬â¢ll fill out information about whether you're applying early action or regular action, what your parentsââ¬â¢ jobs and highest level of education are, if you have siblings and where they attend college (if applicable), and all the high schools you attended, among other information. After you submit Part 1, youââ¬â¢ll pay the $75 MIT application fee. Part 2 is more in depth. Youââ¬â¢ll enter information about all the extracurriculars and jobs youââ¬â¢ve participated in, advanced classes youââ¬â¢ve taken, awards youââ¬â¢ve won, and your exam scores (although youââ¬â¢ll still have to send official copies of these scores). Youââ¬â¢ll also self-report all the classes youââ¬â¢ve taken and the grades you got in them although, again, youââ¬â¢ll still need to submit your official transcript. This is also the section where you enter the information about the two teachers who are writing evaluations for you (see Step 5 for more info) and submit any supplemental materials (see Step 6 for more info). Finally, youââ¬â¢ll complete the MITââ¬â¢s personal statements. Unlike many other schools, MIT doesnââ¬â¢t require one long essay; instead, youââ¬â¢ll answer five short prompts. Here are the essay prompts, along with the word count requirement: We know you lead a busy life, full of activities, many of which are required of you. Tell us about something you do for the pleasure of it. (100 words or fewer) Although you may not yet know what you want to major in, which department or program at MIT appeals to you and why? (100 words or fewer) At MIT, we bring people together to better the lives of others. MIT students work to improve their communities in different ways, from tackling the world's biggest challenges to being a good friend. Describe one way in which you have contributed to your community, whether in your family, the classroom, your neighborhood, etc. (200-250 words) Describe the world you come from; for example, your family, clubs, school, community, city, or town. How has that world shaped your dreams and aspirations? (200-250 words) Tell us about the most significant challenge you've faced or something important that didn't go according to plan. How did you manage the situation? (200-250 words) After youââ¬â¢ve finished each of these sections and reviewed them, you can submit them. Part 1 must be submitted before Part 2. Step 3: Submit Your Secondary School Report and Standardized Test Scores Youââ¬â¢ll need to send your official high school transcript to MIT.MIT also requires three test scores. You must take either the SAT or ACT (the writing section/essay isnââ¬â¢t required for either exam) as well as two SAT Subject Tests. One subject test must be a math test (either Math Level 1 or Math Level 2), and the second subject test must be a science test (either Biology, Chemistry, or Physics). Step 4: Ask Two Teachers to Fill Out Your Evaluations Youââ¬â¢ll need two letters of recommendation for MIT, one from a math/science teacher and one from a humanities/language teacher. On your MyMIT Dashboard, youââ¬â¢ll fill out each of your recommenderââ¬â¢s names and email addresses so the form can be sent to them.Your recommendations are due the same day as the rest of your application. Step 5: Set Up and Complete an Interview Interviews are not technically required, but MIT highly recommends them and admits very few applicants who didnââ¬â¢t interview, so youââ¬â¢ll want to do one if itââ¬â¢s at all possible.Once you complete Parts 1 and 2 of the application, youââ¬â¢ll be contacted by an Educational Counselor (EC), who will be the person doing your interview. The EC is an alum of MIT who conducts interviews, and there are over 5,000 of them around the world. You and your EC will set up an interview at a place near you. Most early action interviews take place in November, and most regular action interviews take place in January. The interview typically lasts an hour and often take place in a location such as a coffee shop, restaurant, or library. Some may also take place over Skype. MIT recommends thinking about questions you might be asked before the interview, and here are 14 of the most common college interview questions. Step 6: (Optional) Submit Supplementary Materials You also have the option to submit supplementary materials, this is a completely optional step and is typically done by students with a fine arts portfolio, those with research experience, and/or those who hope to play a varsity sport for MIT. There are six different supplemental materials you can send, and most (all except the varsity sports interest form) come with an additional fee of $5-$10. You can find more information about each of these options on your MyMIT Dashboard. If you choose to complete any of these materials, youââ¬â¢ll submit them separate from the rest of your application. Here are the options for supplementary materials: Maker Portfolio Music Theater Arts Portfolio Research Portfolio Supplemental Recommendations Varsity Sports Interest Varsity Sports Interest Step 7: Submit Your February Updates and Notes Form If you applied Early Action and were accepted or applied Regular Action (you wonââ¬â¢t have your admission decision yet), youââ¬â¢ll also need to submit your February Updates and Notes form by February 15th. Youââ¬â¢ll be emailed information about this form which will mostly consist of letting MIT know what your fall semester grades were and what classes youââ¬â¢re taking for your spring semester. MIT Application Checklist Below is everything you need to submit with your MIT application. You can use this application checklist to stay organized and make sure you've submitted all the required materials. Parts 1 and 2 of the MIT Application Evaluation A: Letter of recommendation from a math or science teacher Evaluation B: Letter of recommendation from a humanities, social science, or language teacher Scheduled Interview SAT or ACT scores Two SAT Subject Test scores (one from each of MITââ¬â¢s two categories) February Updates Notes Form (due in February) $75 MIT application fee How to Do Well on Key Sections of the MIT Application How can you have a stellar MIT application? Because MIT is so competitive, your application will need to be strong in all the key areas MIT evaluates. MIT is looking primarily for academic excellence, leadership experience, passion for learning and your future major, and sociability. There are numerous ways you can show you have these qualities on your MIT application. In this section we go over the five most essential parts of your application and explain exactly what you need in order to stand out and show MIT you have what it takes to succeed there. #1: High School Transcript Your high school transcript is often the single most important piece of your application, so you want it to shine. Your goal here is to show admissions officers that you took difficult classes and got top grades in them, particularly the math and science classes. MIT has rigorous classes, and theyââ¬â¢re looking for applicants who have already challenged themselves by taking advanced classes in high school. If your school offers honors, AP, and/or IB classes, you should aim to take at least some of these advanced classes, especially those in the field you plan to major in. If your school doesnââ¬â¢t offer these classes MIT also has suggestions for alternative ways to challenge yourself. MIThas no requirements for classes you had to have taken in high school but it recommends the following: One year of physics One year of chemistry One year of biology Math, through calculus Two years of a foreign language Four years of English Two years of history and/or social sciences Remember, this is the minimum MIT recommends; youââ¬â¢ll likely have to go above and beyond in some areas to be a competitive applicant. Most applicants will have taken at least four years each of math and science, including multiple advanced classes. Your GPA is also a crucial part of your MIT application since taking difficult classes but doing poorly in them doesnââ¬â¢t show that youââ¬â¢re prepared for the rigor of MIT. The average weighted GPA of MIT admitted students is about 4.13, which means you should aim to get as many Aââ¬â¢s as possible in your classes. #2: Standardized Test Scores MIT doesnââ¬â¢t have a minimum score requirement for the SAT/ACT, but because admission is so competitive, you should aim for a high standardized test score.Your goal should be to reach the 75th percentile score for admitted MIT students. Meeting this score for either the SAT or ACT means you will have scored higher than 75% of other admitted students, which puts you in a strong position during the admissions process. For the SAT, a 75th percentile score is an 800 in Math and a 770 in Evidence-Based Reading and Writing. For the ACT, itââ¬â¢s a composite score of 35.You can get scores lower than this and still get accepted to MIT, but these are solid goal scores to try to aim for. For your two SAT Subject Tests, you should aim for at least a 750 in both exams. It doesnââ¬â¢t matter which science subject test you take (although if thereââ¬â¢s one thatââ¬â¢s close to your intended major, try to take that one), but you should try to take Math Level 2 for the math requirement if at all possible since a high score on this exam is more impressive than a high score on Math Level 1. #3: Letters of Recommendation Youââ¬â¢ll need two letters of recommendation for MIT, and they should both come from teachers who know you well and can write convincingly about your strengths. A strong letter of rec will include specific examples of your academic abilities and personal skills; it will also explain why youââ¬â¢re an excellent applicant for MIT. Speak to the people youââ¬â¢d like to write your letters fairly early, ideally at the end of your junior year or beginning of your senior year.Check out our guide on letters of recfor more information on who to ask to write your letter of recommendation and a step-by-step guide on how to ask. #4: MIT Essays For MIT, youââ¬â¢ll need to write five short essays, each less than 250 words. MIT requires multiple short essays to get a more complete view of who you are, so make sure you show your personality and what you care about. There are three main goals for your MIT essays: Show who you are Show whatââ¬â¢s important to you Show why MIT is the best school for you For tips and strategies on how to answer every one of the MIT essay prompts, check out our in-depth guide to answering the MIT essays. #5: Extracurriculars Your extracurriculars are also a key part of your MIT application. The best way to stand out with your extracurriculars is to emphasize your passion and leadership skills. You can do this by pursuing extracurriculars in a field related to your future major, sticking with them, and achieving leadership roles in them.Learn more about the types of extracurriculars you'll need to get into top-tier schools. Itââ¬â¢s also important to note that you should choose your extracurriculars based on what youââ¬â¢re interested in and passionate about, not what you think will impress MIT. On their website, MIT specifically counsels against this, as theyââ¬â¢d rather have students doing what they love than those spending their time on things they donââ¬â¢t care about just to try and look impressive. Recap: MIT Application Because MIT only accepts less than 7% of applicants, your application needs to stand out if you want a chance of getting in.Before you do anything else, make sure you know that MIT application deadlines. They differ depending on whether youââ¬â¢re applying Early Action or Regular Action. Give yourself enough time to complete all parts of the application, which will include entering in all your grades and classes, completing five MIT essay prompts, and entering in your test scores.Donââ¬â¢t forget to send in additional materials such as your transcript, official test scores, and letters of recommendation. MIT also highly recommends doing an interview. To give yourself the best chance of getting admitted, you want your MIT application to b strong across the board. The five most important parts of your application are your: transcript, standardized test scores, letters of recommendation, essays, and extracurriculars. What's Next? PETITION FOR UNSPONSORED LEARNING Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words
PETITION FOR UNSPONSORED LEARNING - Essay Example We raised her and provided all her physical and emotional needs. Unfortunately, my wife and I separated in March 2006. In the intervening period, we tried our best to sort out the seeming differences between us. Nevertheless, all the efforts failed to bear fruit. Consequently, the marriage was finally dissolved a year and seven months after the initial separation. Just like my wedding seven years earlier, my divorce in October 2007 was a fundamental event in my life with wide-ranging effects on my young family. After the conclusion of my divorce, I was awarded full custody of my minor child. Although I was ecstatic at the opportunity of raising Jordan to maturity, I was aware of the fact that such a monumental task would run me to the ground. Nevertheless, I was determined to do my utmost so as to fulfill all my obligations. There are various significant events that influenced the experiences discussed in my learning assignments. The first major event came after my graduation from high school in June 1998. In August 1999, I formed my company and gained my first shot at autonomy. The beginning of my work experience formed the first step in a long line of employment positions that I was privileged to hold from then onwards. Another significant life event that shaped my life was my marriage in May 2000. My wife and I had been acquainted since childhood, and the sense of attraction had grown over a long period. Therefore, it was extremely satisfying to tie the knot finally and have her as my wife. The start of my marriage coincided with the beginning of my professional career. I teamed up with my wife and formed a business called Accurate Answers. The company began operations in January 2001, barely a few months after our wedding. The corporation offered DNA and drug testing services. Accurate Answers provided onsite drug testing for county courts, consumers, and businesses. The success of our marriage coincided with the
