In accordance to the question above, a claim was developed after a series of experiments and observations, Ammonium Chloride, NH4Cl, is the most effectual but also economical ingredient to make a cold pack because it met the requirements of being an inexpensive salt and lowering the mixtures temperature by 2c. The claim was proved correctly based off of the quantitative and qualitative data that was taken down during the experiment. To find out whether the salt in the cold back is a good substance or not, the change in enthalpy change, which occurs with the process of dissolution, is also known as the heat of solution. At a constant pressure, the heat of solution is equivalent to the heat lost from the surrounding. For this to happen, the energy is absorbed to break the intermolecular bonds of both the water and the solute, energy is gained in this process. Then, energy is released as attractive forces start to form between the broken ions and water molecules, from here, energy is re leased. The heat of solution can therefore be an exothermic or endothermic depending on which one is stronger. In this case, the energy absorbed is stronger than the one being released which means it turns cold, an endothermic. So, one can discover if a cold pack is effective by finding the heat of solution then compare to the other salts tested to find out both economically cheap and most effective salt. Before the investigation commenced, steps were created in order to make sure that everything was going to work out. Using the previously known information, from previous labs made, it was inducted that the following steps would be done to perfect the experiment. First of all the safety equipment was gathered, the materials needed would be gathered and cleaned thoroughly to reduce any human error. The salts that were tested were Ammonium Chloride, Ammonium Nitrate, Magnesium Sulfate and Ammonium Thiocyanate. Then, a calorimeter would be made, two styrofoam cups within one another, a sheet of aluminum between them, a thermometer on top which was struck through the aluminum top to keep the temperature as isolated as possible to have the most accurate information. Then, taking a plastic cup, 30ml of water was measured out then placed into the calorimeter because then 2.5 grams of a salt was measured out. The initial temperature of the water was taken before the ingredients were mixed, i mmediately after, the temperature was taken down every five seconds for two minutes. The information was recorded in a graph and then averages of the time were taken down so there could be an even information for all salts so there would be no mistake made. The steps above were then repeated twice for each salt, all information recorded into a graph as well. The experiment was conducted in this way to include all of the possible experiments previously done to prove that it was successful, which in the end, based off of the claim, it was correct. Based off of the guiding question, Ammonium Chloride is the best salt needed to meet both the requirements of being an economically cheap salt and also effective. Ammonium Chloride fell from 21.25c to 18.65c, it dropped more than 2c. The second part of the question asks to choose the cheapest salt, that is still effective which is NH4Cl at $0.0139 per gram. Thus, the salt that meets the guiding questions needs is Ammonium Chloride because it met the 2c temperature drop along with an economically cheap price. Using the graphs and tables provided, it is easier to identify the change in temperature for each salt. When one observes NH4Cl, it is easy to comprehend that it is the most efficient one since it has around the same information like the more better, but also expensive ones. Plato was evidently trying to resolve the ever lasting debate of what virtue was and what elements constituted virtue. In his dialogue with Gorgias, Socrates has not unilaterally concluded what virtue was; he has rather discussed what it could be. I totally agree with Plato who states that â€Å"the good is not the same as the pleasant, my friend, nor the evil as the painful† (Plato), because to be pleasant means to be subjective, and the notion of good is evidently an objective philosophical category. Virtue may be determined through the prism of its separate elements. Even when each of us individually determines what virtue is, there are still certain specific societal norms which may help us distinguish between good and evil. Plato has actually created several grounded suggestions as for what virtue was by discussing its separate elements: power, justice, temperance, and art.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   â€Å"Rhetoric is to justice what cookery is to medicine† (Plato). This may initially seem surprising, as virtue and rhetoric are the two completely different philosophical categories. Moreover, there can hardly any connections between these two. However, Plato links them through the importance of rhetoric to justice, and through the importance of justice to the virtue. Objectively, the whole dialogue between Socrates and Gorgias comprises several separate discussions which are connected by one common topic: virtue. Plato was trying to depict virtue as the system of separate attributes and elements, and to discuss them through the prism of those elements: art, temperance, evil, and good. This is why Plato has concluded that good could not be equaled to pleasure due to its objectivity as opposed to the subjectivity of pleasure. Plato started Socrates’ dialogue with the discussion of art of rhetoric, and has led it to the issue of the greatest good. As virtue is determined and is directly connected to the greatest good, it is crucial that people know what this greatest good is. â€Å"That good, Socrates, which is truly the greatest, being that which gives men freedom in their own persons, and to individuals the power of ruling over others in their several states† (Plato). That was the vision of the greatest good as expressed by Gorgias. This is the individual vision of Gorgias, which may not always be accepted by others. As a result, how do we determine the difference between the false and the true arts? How do we determine what false and what truthful knowledge is? These were the questions raised by Plato in his Gorgias, and this is where the philosopher again implied that the greatest good was an objective, and not subjective philosophical category. Good and evil are the two objective categories which can even be taught or learnt. Subjective categories can hardly be learnt, this is why Plato implies that good is objective. Only objective philosophical categories can be learnt by others and can be perceived in a manner expected by other members of the society: â€Å"so he whom you make a rhetorician must either know the nature of the just and unjust already, or he must be taught by you† (Plato).   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   In his work, Plato speaks much about evil. Evil is opposed to good, and is also considered to be an objective philosophical category. According to Plato, evil is rooted in the wrongful and shameful acts. The seriousness of evil can either be determined by the extent of shame the person experiences, or by the severity of physical pain the person feels. It is interesting that this is the only position which is unilaterally accepted by all participants of the conversation. â€Å"Then I said truly, Polus that neither you, nor I, nor any man, would rather, do than suffer injustice; for to do injustice is the greater evil of the two† (Plato). Plato explicitly determines what the greatest evil is, and Socrates’ opponents have but to agree with him. Pain is subjective, and being involved into evil does not mean experiencing pain. Evil is the integral element of the discussion of virtue. There cannot be any effective discussion of what virtue is, without trying to define what evil can be. The importance of evil as philosophical notion is in its being linked to other crucial notions within the framework of virtue discussion. Politics, power, temperance – a philosopher cannot evaluate these categories away from evil. As Plato concludes that injustice and intemperance are the two greatest evils, he not only confirms the philosophical objectivity of evil, but he once again returns to the issue of pleasant and good: pleasant cannot always be good, and evil cannot always be pain. There is clear distinction between subjective and objective philosophical categories, and this is the key to understanding the implications of moral standards in Plato’s society.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   As Plato speaks about good, evil, justice, temperance, power, and other important philosophical categories, he pursues the ultimate aim of his discussion and his lifelong philosophy: to define what virtue is. Those who participate in Socrates’ discussion, actually participate not in the dialogue, but in the brilliant argument upon the relevance and objectivity of these categories. Nonetheless, the objectivity of power, temperance, and justice is not debated: these also constitute the objective notion of virtue. As evil is not always pain, and good is not always pleasant, Plato also tries to show that â€Å"a man should be temperate and master of himself, and ruler of his own pleasures and passions† (Plato). Thus, a person should realize what common good is, what pleasures he is to suppress and to temper his passions. This knowledge of good and evil is the objective realization of societal standards and norms. This is the realization of how good or evil impacts our existence. Plato uses this key comparison between pleasant and good to show that he was correct in his assumption: virtue is the objective notion, and it can be determined in universal philosophical terms, which are objective, too. The separate objective elements (power, justice, temperance, art) ultimately constitute the philosophical structure of virtue.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   I absolutely agree with Plato: pleasant is never equal to good, and pain is never equal to evil. Let’s discuss this point in detail. A simple example will help understand my position. We are constantly involved into the process of taking decisions. We must decide how to behave, how to apologize, how to avoid troubles, etc. There are the two distinctive criteria, on which we can base our judgments. First, we can rely on the universally accepted norms of human behavior in our society. Our standards make us aware and teach us how we should behave in certain situations, and what good and evil is. Second, we may also rely on our pleasure, and pleasure may become the main criterion in our decision making. This means that we will not rely on norms and standards of human behavior: we will use extremely subjective measurements which may hardly be accepted by others. Here pleasure is very close to personal tastes, which are never identical. If I enjoy historical documentaries, this does not mean that my brother will like them too; he would hardly accept the situation in which I will constantly watch this type of TV programs, and will not let him watch what he wants. This is where pleasure and good come into action. This is where objectivity and subjectivity of virtue become almost tangible. If I base my decision on pleasure, I will neglect the interests of other family members, and will keep doing what I want. Does this mean that I am good, if I experience pleasure in this situation? Certainly, it does not. Good is not similar to pleasant, and pleasure is a subjective category. What pleases me does not necessarily pleases others, but what is good is usually good for everyone. Being generous, attentive to others, and sharing is good; it is also good for those who need this attention and generosity.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   This prism of discussion also possesses a different facet. When a person is good to others, does it mean that this person is pleased with such situation? Coming back to the issue with television and documentaries, a person may certainly accept the need to follow the general standards of virtue, good, and temperance. This person will do everything possible to suppress the wishes and pleasures, and to let other family members watch TV. Simultaneously, this need â€Å"to be good† will probably urge the person to step over his inner principles, and to pretend that to be good is pleasant. This person may avoid displaying the displease with such situation, or may not conceal the irritation, but it is evident that to be good for this person is not to feel pleasure of this goodness.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   What I see as the key element of Plato’s argument, is the need to distinguish between the true and the false elements of virtue, between the objective and subjective standards of our conduct, and between pleasure and good. Plato was also discussing the elements of evil and pain in his work, but these issues seem less relevant to our lives. If a person wants to follow the standards of good, pleasure should be pushed to the background. In this context, good is not always pleasant. The obligation to conform to the norms of the society is not always linked to any pleasant emotions or perceptions. In order to be accepted by the society, a person might need to overstep his personal principles, and to recognize the importance of good, temperance, power, and justice as the integral components of virtue. Ultimately, the person is to praise the objective moral categories, and to put them ahead of subjective perceptions. This is how human virtue works for the benefit of the whole society. Revelation Essay -- essays research papers

"Revelation, n. A famous book in which St. John the Divine concealed all that he knew. The revealing is done by the commentators, who know nothing."1 The book of Revelation, the only apocalypse among the twenty-seven books of the New Testament, has always occupied a marginal role within the field of Biblical interpretation. Its bizarre visions of beasts, dragons, plagues, and cataclysms have inspired poets and artists while confounding more traditionally minded scholars for centuries. England in the early seventeenth century proved an exception to this rule. The flowering of apocalyptic exegesis in this period among academic circles bestowed a new respectability on the book of Revelation as a literal roadmap of church history from the time of Christ to the present, and on into the eschaton. The principal writers in this field, including Arthur Dent, Thomas Brightman, and Joseph Mede, have been dubbed "Calvinist millenarians" by modern historiography. They were cer tainly Calvinist in their views on doctrine, and also in their melioristic vision of England as the consummation of the Reformation, as an elect nation with the potential to recreate the true church of the early Christians. Their intense belief in the imminence of the end of the world, however, along with the mode of interpretation which they applied to the Revelation, reflected trends in Christian thought redirected by Martin Luther, and largely ignored by John Calvin. In this paper I will examine Luthers role in three English interpretations of the Revelation, discussing both his influence as an intellectual precedent, and his appearance as a character within these texts. Luther himself never wrote a detailed commentary on the Apocalypse, but in a preface to the 1530 edition of his German New Testament, he outlined a mode of exegesis which emphasized the application of the Revelation to history. This literal approach first appeared in England in a 1545 commentary by John Bale, a transitional figure often considered the progenitor of the English apocalytic tradition. Later works utilized Luthers model more completely, and I will cite three of these in particular: Arthur Dents Ruin of Rome (1603), an excellent introduction to the mainstream of English commentaries; Thomas Brightmans Revelation of St. John (1609), which epitomized the Anglocentric slant inherent to the Englis... ...rines and works."16 Unlike some medieval commentators, who also identified the pagan Turk with Antichrist, Luther chose to apply the image strictly to the papacy, and associated the Turk with the beasts unleashed by the devil after his millennium of bondage.17 Thus Luther used both history and Scripture to attack the Pope, and this doctrinal foundation allowed him to carry his polemic one step further. He believed that under the influence of the ungodly papacy the Church had diverged from the true, "hidden" Church which continued to uphold the Word of God under persecution. Luthers reinterpretation of the two cities of Augustine appeared in his 1530 preface, where he stated that one could read the Revelation as a warning against the trials the church will face. In these battles, the enemies of the faithful will obscure the church under heresies and other faults, calling the elect "them damned heretics who are really the true christian Church."18 Luther was far from being the first to interpret history as Gods work, but his insistence on the agreement between the Bible and history led him to mount a novel, doctrinally based assault on the Catholic Church.

In Tomas Wolfe’s â€Å"The Child by Tiger,† Dick Prosser, an oppressed black man living in the South, symbolizes innocence and evilness. Although Dick appears as an extremely religious and respectful man in white society, he gradually allows evilness to consume him, causing Dick to embark on a killing spree. While conforming to the black role, Dick attempts to gain a positive reputation through treating the children with respect. He calls them by a â€Å"formal address – ‘Mr.’ Crane, ‘Mr.’ Potterham, ‘Mr.’ Spangler, ‘Cap’n’ Shepperton.† He teaches the boys how to play football and how to box so that he can live a better life. Through his chores, Dick constantly proves to be a respectful worker. He would even sing hymnals as he goes â€Å"about his work around the house.† Dick keeps his room â€Å"spotless as a barracks room† with only his Bible on his little table. Although he is a smart man, others still only see him as the â€Å"smartest darky.† On Sundays during church service, Dick would stand â€Å"neatly dressed in his good dark suit† and would â€Å"humbly† listen to the â€Å"entire sermon.† Although Dick is not allowed in the white church, he stands at the â€Å"side door† and recognizes the familiar verses from his â€Å"old Bible,† which is â€Å"worn out by constant use.† After years of oppression, Dick finally decided that he had enough. The day that Lon Everett, a white drunken man, â€Å"skidded murdously† and â€Å"sideswiped† Dick was the very same day that his â€Å"eyes went red.† Dick proceeds to tend to his master after the crash. Everett then â€Å"smashed him in the face† while Dick’s hands â€Å"twitched slightly† at his side. Once Everett punched Dick for the second time, blood comes â€Å"trickling† down his face. Dick moved swiftly down the street â€Å"shooting from the hip† killing both blacks and white whether they were guilty or innocent. One â€Å"old Negro man stuck out† his head and is shot without hesitation. Another â€Å"kindly,† â€Å"devoted,† â€Å"pleasant florid faced man† is murdered as well. Dick sees whites as the enemy as well as the blacks who do nothing to change the course of history. As Dick surrenders peacefully, he is â€Å"filled with bullets† by the â€Å"posse.† The men shot him some more and then took his â€Å"lifeless body† and â€Å"hung him to a tree† where they sprayed him with more bullets until he was a â€Å"riddled carcass.† He is brought back to town to be hung in a window like an animal as a warning to other blacks. Living as an oppressed black man in the South, Dick Prosser symbolizes both the good and evil in everyone through his good deeds and his ramped killing spree. Even though Dick clearly had the ability to fight back, he was held back by the white society because he had no rights.

Methodology The objective of this research is to investigate publics’ attitude and perception towards the Red Bull brand. A 10 questions survey was designed based on an introductory research. Findings Red Bull’s current expression is focused on making the product appropriate as a life style drink and not connected to one aspect (i.e. sports). The survey that was conducted previously reflects the lack of gap between the current brand expression and the consumer perceive. The respondents are aware of the brand value that the company is trying to portray. This awareness is reflected on the public attitude which both the brand expression and image are settled on the impression of Red Bull as for the cool, fun, risk-taking crowd, not just a drink for athletics enthusiasts. Conclusions This report and survey results showed that Red Bull made successful brand equity that maintained it self on the first rank with customer satisfaction and market share. It also succeeded on delivering the right message and values to the right target audience. It can also be found in New South Wales. The oil has a fresh odor of almost colorless substance. The product is considered to be a natural antiseptic that is widely used in cosmetics and medicine. It can also be effective for treating various dermatologic problems, such as acne, herpes, foot fungus, dandruff and other skin infections. In particular, the indigenous population used tea tree leaves due to their healing effect. It was further approved in medicine and biology, leading to the rise of the tea tree industry. With regard to the above-presented facts, the emergence of the tea tree oil industry has been associated with the environmental factors and consumer demand. Major Problems Led to the Tea Tree Oil Production As it has been briefly mentioned, tea tree oil was used for healing wounds and skin problems. Its active use refers to the period of the World War II, the time when the product was used for healing wounds (Australian Tea Tree Oil, 2009). As a result, it could be stressed that the major problems leading to the active use of tea tree oil were associated with health problems and social unrest. Due to its effective medical properties, the tea tree essential oil was first of all used as a medicine that could heal wounds, having an antibacterial effect. Health problems, therefore, were decisive in spreading and encouraging the production of the oil. Factors That Have Led to the Emergence of These Problems The history of the product counts more than seventy years. In the 1920s and 1930s the indigenous Bundjalung people residing in Eastern Australia were assume to have applied tea trees in traditional medicine (Australian Tea Tree Oil, 2009). They crushed leaves of the tree and treated wounds, sore throats and insect bites. The area in which the plant is grown is called Bungawalbyn, which is also translated as the ‘healing ground’. When Captain James Cook arrived to this area, he called the plant a tea tree because the local population made tee from the leaves for healing purposes. Further, the plant became the object of the medical and biological reports. Specifically, Arthur Penfold and Morrison introduced first reports on the qualities and antiseptic properties of a tee tree (Australian Tea Tree Oil, 2009). Instead, only natural substances are introduced into production. From a consumerist perspective, the product is environmentally friendly, ensuring a significant competitive advantage over the production of other antiseptic products. Since its launch to the market, the product underwent several stages of product implementation and integration. Due to the emergence of the so-called ‘cure-all’ products, consumers were obsessed with buying such commodities because they believed in the advertising of their values. However, subjective descriptions of commodities create false assumptions about the product. In case of tea tree oil, some of the retailers still use false descriptions to make people believe that their products are more effective (Robbins, 2013). The market trends in product launch are oriented at capturing the new market segment and attract new customers by introducing new qualities. However, such qualities should be presented not in the form of falsely assumed values, but in the form of serious research conducted to prove that tea tree oil is effective as antiseptic (Australian Tea Tree Oil, 2009). In contrast, when a false assumption is created about the product values, it makes no connection with the physical description of the product nature. By means of establishing the relationship between the buyers and customers through exchanging goods and money, the commodity fetishism is created. Similar to it, the Body Shop is also working on the creation of the consumer-oriented philosophy, according to which the cosmetic they offer is highly valued because it is made of natural ingredients. Although the company focuses on the top quality of the product, the relation between retailer and the consumer is still important and the latter perceive the products as commodities, being an inherent part of social interaction. Due to the development and spread of the commodity fetishism paradigm, the false consciousness is created among the consumers regarding a specific commodity. From sociological perspective, a false consciousness is a subjective attitude that is imposed on an individual and which is often presented as a personal opinion of an individual, although it is not reflected accurately and objectively. Hence, sometimes, a consumer can express a specific thought regarding a product due to the generally accepted opinion among the consumers who reject the objective position. Sometimes, people buy products as a result of strong ideology developed by the company. In particular, the ideological conceptions are often misinterpreted by consumers. In fact, such ideological statements create false consciousness, which leads to the creation of dominant ideology. It is currently a growing trend for all the companies to introduce their environmental strategies to influence customer decisions whether to buy product or not (Robbins, 2013). The idea of false consciousness, therefore, makes people committed to a specific product, although there is always a possibility that such idea is only a well-arranged combination of words. In order to understand the consumer trend, the attention should be placed on the market established for tea tree oil. The manufactures should offer improved products which could compete with similar goods in the field. At this point, it is essential to adhere to a positive approach regarding marketing of tea tree oil. Its major qualities and virtues should be emphasized and meet the highest standards, which is possible through reducing the percentage of cineole, a substance which enhances the oil properties. To explain the issue, the scholars argue, â€Å"†¦some natural tea tree oils of higher cineole content, but still within the ISO Standards, are more effective against certain pathogens† (Southwell Lowe, 2003, p. 208). It should be assumed, however, that the major market segment for tea tree oil product is introduced in the cosmetic field, assigning the description of general antiseptic, pure oil, which could be used for treating acne and skin infections. Although the market segment develops, expansion is still restricted due to the difficulties in obtaining approval regarding the effectiveness of the product. In case of success, new markets could be open, alongside with the registration of FDA monographs, emergence of goods registers and other procedures, which imply significant costs (Robbins, 2013). Despite such difficulties, the oil could be sold in the pharmaceutical field. As a result, it is essential for the product to gain a competitive advantage over other related products, which have been introduced in the market. While the oils are highly appraised in the cosmetic field, the main requirement in the medical sphere is directly associated with the effectiveness. The above-presented marketing strategies introduce certain methods and trends in shaping ‘consumer consciousnesses’, which are used by the Body Shop, a beauty retails, which operates over 35 years. Many consumers are still committed to the products due to the retailer’s philosophy. Its environmental strategies allow the consumers to notice that human rights and fair trade are among the priorities and, therefore, many consumers are captured by such philosophy (Australian Tea Tree Oil, 2009). With such a low admissions rate, it may seem like getting accepted is close to impossible, but we’re here to help! In this guide, we’ll explain everything you need to know to complete the MIT application, including when every important MIT application deadline is, what exactly you need to submit with your application, what admissions officers are really looking for when they review your application, and how you can make each part of your MIT application stand out from the pack. Key Info for the MIT Application You should know all the important information about the MIT application well before you plan on applying to make sure you gather all your materials and meet all the deadlines. Where to find the MIT application: You can find the MIT application here. The application opens in August of each year. How to submit the MIT application: When you’ve completed the MIT application, you can submit it by hitting the â€Å"Submit† button at the end of the application. SAT and/or ACT scores, as well as your official transcript, must be sent directly to MIT. When to submit the MIT application:It's very important to know the MIT application deadline. MIT offers both early action and regular action application submissions. Below is a chart of the key deadlines for each option. It’s important to know every deadline since missing just one could mean your application won’t be looked at. For students applying regular action, you’ll need to have all parts of the application completed/sent by January 1st, and you can take your standardized tests no later than December. You’ll receive your admission decision in mid-March. Should You Apply Early Action or Regular Action? There are two options for applying to MIT, early action and regular action. Is one better than the other?If you apply early action, you do have a slightly better chance of getting accepted. According to MIT’s admission statistics, if you apply early action, you do have a slightly better chance of getting accepted than if you apply regular action. However, MIT specifically states this about its early action cycle: "There is no positive or negative prejudice associated with or conferred by applying during either cycle. We do not have a preference, and there is no strategic benefit to be had. We have two cycles for two reasons: 1) it helps us spread our work out over a longer period, devoting more time to each application and 2) it provides applicants with more options so they can choose which works best for them." Additionally, the majority (about 66%) of students who apply early action end up getting deferred and considered in the regular action applicant pool. So an early decision is by no means guaranteed if you apply early action. Bottom line? Apply early action if you can get all the materials in before the deadline, but don’t stress too much about it if you can’t since it likely won’t impact your chance of getting admitted. How to Apply to MIT There are six main steps you need to follow to submit your MIT application. Below are the steps, numbered in the rough order you should complete them in. Step 1: Create a MyMIT Account and Start Your Application The first step to applying to MIT is simple; you just need to create a MyMIT account.Creating an account only takes a few minutes, and once you do this you’ll be able to complete an application, track the pieces of the application you’ve submitted, join the MIT mailing list, and get your interviewer’s name and contact information. To create an account you’ll have to fill out some basic demographic information such as your birthdate, high school name, and home address. Step 2: Complete Parts 1 and 2 of the Application This is the bulk of the MIT application. Part 1 focuses on biographical information, and Part 2 focuses on your essays, activities, and test scores.Part 1 is the shorter section and should only take you about 30 minutes to complete. You’ll fill out information about whether you're applying early action or regular action, what your parents’ jobs and highest level of education are, if you have siblings and where they attend college (if applicable), and all the high schools you attended, among other information.After you submit Part 1, you’ll pay the $75 MIT application fee. Part 2 is more in depth. You’ll enter information about all the extracurriculars and jobs you’ve participated in, advanced classes you’ve taken, awards you’ve won, and your exam scores (although you’ll still have to send official copies of these scores). You’ll also self-report all the classes you’ve taken and the grades you got in them although, again, you’ll still need to submit your official transcript.This is also the section where you enter the information about the two teachers who are writing evaluations for you (see Step 5 for more info) and submit any supplemental materials (see Step 6 for more info). Finally, you’ll complete the MIT’s personal statements. Unlike many other schools, MIT doesn’t require one long essay; instead, you’ll answer five short prompts. Here are the essay prompts, along with the word count requirement: We know you lead a busy life, full of activities, many of which are required of you. Tell us about something you do for the pleasure of it. (100 words or fewer) Although you may not yet know what you want to major in, which department or program at MIT appeals to you and why? (100 words or fewer) At MIT, we bring people together to better the lives of others. MIT students work to improve their communities in different ways, from tackling the world's biggest challenges to being a good friend. Describe one way in which you have contributed to your community, whether in your family, the classroom, your neighborhood, etc. (200-250 words) Describe the world you come from; for example, your family, clubs, school, community, city, or town. How has that world shaped your dreams and aspirations? (200-250 words) Tell us about the most significant challenge you've faced or something important that didn't go according to plan. How did you manage the situation? (200-250 words) After you’ve finished each of these sections and reviewed them, you can submit them. Part 1 must be submitted before Part 2. Step 3: Submit Your Secondary School Report and Standardized Test Scores You’ll need to send your official high school transcript to MIT.MIT also requires three test scores. You must take either the SAT or ACT (the writing section/essay isn’t required for either exam) as well as two SAT Subject Tests. One subject test must be a math test (either Math Level 1 or Math Level 2), and the second subject test must be a science test (either Biology, Chemistry, or Physics). Step 4: Ask Two Teachers to Fill Out Your Evaluations You’ll need two letters of recommendation for MIT, one from a math/science teacher and one from a humanities/language teacher.On your MyMIT Dashboard, you’ll fill out each of your recommender’s names and email addresses so the form can be sent to them.Your recommendations are due the same day as the rest of your application. Step 5: Set Up and Complete an Interview Interviews are not technically required, but MIT highly recommends them and admits very few applicants who didn’t interview, so you’ll want to do one if it’s at all possible.Once you complete Parts 1 and 2 of the application, you’ll be contacted by an Educational Counselor (EC), who will be the person doing your interview. The EC is an alum of MIT who conducts interviews, and there are over 5,000 of them around the world. You and your EC will set up an interview at a place near you. Most early action interviews take place in November, and most regular action interviews take place in January. The interview typically lasts an hour and often take place in a location such as a coffee shop, restaurant, or library. Some may also take place over Skype. MIT recommends thinking about questions you might be asked before the interview, and here are 14 of the most common college interview questions. Step 6: (Optional) Submit Supplementary Materials You also have the option to submit supplementary materials, this is a completely optional step and is typically done by students with a fine arts portfolio, those with research experience, and/or those who hope to play a varsity sport for MIT. There are six different supplemental materials you can send, and most (all except the varsity sports interest form) come with an additional fee of $5-$10. Because MIT is so competitive, your application will need to be strong in all the key areas MIT evaluates. MIT is looking primarily for academic excellence, leadership experience, passion for learning and your future major, and sociability. There are numerous ways you can show you have these qualities on your MIT application. In this section we go over the five most essential parts of your application and explain exactly what you need in order to stand out and show MIT you have what it takes to succeed there. #1: High School Transcript Your high school transcript is often the single most important piece of your application, so you want it to shine. Your goal here is to show admissions officers that you took difficult classes and got top grades in them, particularly the math and science classes. MIT has rigorous classes, and they’re looking for applicants who have already challenged themselves by taking advanced classes in high school. If your school offers honors, AP, and/or IB classes, you should aim to take at least some of these advanced classes, especially those in the field you plan to major in. If your school doesn’t offer these classes MIT also has suggestions for alternative ways to challenge yourself. MIThas no requirements for classes you had to have taken in high school but it recommends the following: One year of physics One year of chemistry One year of biology Math, through calculus Two years of a foreign language Four years of English Two years of history and/or social sciences Remember, this is the minimum MIT recommends; you’ll likely have to go above and beyond in some areas to be a competitive applicant. Most applicants will have taken at least four years each of math and science, including multiple advanced classes. Your GPA is also a crucial part of your MIT application since taking difficult classes but doing poorly in them doesn’t show that you’re prepared for the rigor of MIT. The average weighted GPA of MIT admitted students is about 4.13, which means you should aim to get as many A’s as possible in your classes. #2: Standardized Test Scores MIT doesn’t have a minimum score requirement for the SAT/ACT, but because admission is so competitive, you should aim for a high standardized test score.Your goal should be to reach the 75th percentile score for admitted MIT students. Meeting this score for either the SAT or ACT means you will have scored higher than 75% of other admitted students, which puts you in a strong position during the admissions process. For the SAT, a 75th percentile score is an 800 in Math and a 770 in Evidence-Based Reading and Writing. For the ACT, it’s a composite score of 35.You can get scores lower than this and still get accepted to MIT, but these are solid goal scores to try to aim for. For your two SAT Subject Tests, you should aim for at least a 750 in both exams. It doesn’t matter which science subject test you take (although if there’s one that’s close to your intended major, try to take that one), but you should try to take Math Level 2 for the math requirement if at all possible since a high score on this exam is more impressive than a high score on Math Level 1. #3: Letters of Recommendation You’ll need two letters of recommendation for MIT, and they should both come from teachers who know you well and can write convincingly about your strengths. A strong letter of rec will include specific examples of your academic abilities and personal skills; it will also explain why you’re an excellent applicant for MIT. MIT requires multiple short essays to get a more complete view of who you are, so make sure you show your personality and what you care about. The best way to stand out with your extracurriculars is to emphasize your passion and leadership skills. It’s also important to note that you should choose your extracurriculars based on what you’re interested in and passionate about, not what you think will impress MIT. On their website, MIT specifically counsels against this, as they’d rather have students doing what they love than those spending their time on things they don’t care about just to try and look impressive.
